Body Mass Index (BMI)
Measuring Body Mass Index (BMI) is a popular way to
gauge whether or not an individual is overweight. BMI
is calculated by using inches and pounds. This number
is then compared to an “average”.

Your BMI corresponds with body weight. However
variances occur based on age, gender, fitness.
Athletes may have a high BMI based on increased
muscularity, not increased body fat. Women
typically have higher body fat percentages than men.
Problems with BMI:
As with snowflakes, our bodies are unique and
different. BMI may be used as a general gauge, but
we are not "general".
Some medical and fitness experts argue that the problems
with using BMI as a gauge is so significant it is
generally not useful as a tool. Better gauges may
be calculating body fat percentage using tools such as
skin fold measurements, or scales such as the Tanita
which are the methods preferred by The Fit Effect.**
